Migori county marks day of rural women by encouraging agribusiness

Chuodho Women Group is a Women’s right and youth development organization working as a Community Based Organisation (CBO) based in Karungu Division, Nyatike Sub-County, Migori County that operates in the entire Migori County region, all the Lake shore Counties and has plans to expand beyond the Lake shore region.

The CBO was founded in 1986 and registered with the Ministry of Gender and Social Services with a vision of empowering the community for poverty eradication and fostering a socio-economic development plan that is environmentally sensitive.

It’s vision is to have a community that is empowered and in control of its economic and social development.

The main objective of the organization is to support sustainable gender development through use of participatory approaches to enhance food security, access to safe water and better health in a well conserved environment.

Migori County has been strengthening women economic empowerment mission, gender equality and women voice building through agribusiness; In October 2022, Migori County women representative in collaboration with agriculture department held a forum for rural women international day with major aim of sensitizing rural women on agricultural economic empowerment and appreciating the best women groups who have highly impacted the community.
Those present were women led organizations and their members, youth groups and people living with disability. Members of the county assembly were also in attendance as the local government has been collaborating with grassroot organisations to implement the project.
Rural women's day event aimed at encouraging all women groups and exposing them to various sources of financial support. The women were also sensitized on the various funding schemes available at the county level where they can access loans and start projects geared towards financial stability. Gender inequalities bare consequences such as socioeconomic disadvantage to women which made lead to abuse, discrimination and violence. Through the event, stakeholders wanted to encourage agribusiness among women living in the rural areas, award and motivate the women led organizations to prioritize economic mobilization strategies at community levels and Increase women famers, agricultural profitability and productivity
By empowering women with alternative economic means, these women are set on a path of self growth through personal projects and group activities such as self-help groups.
