RETENTION AND TRANSITION OF YOUNG GIRLS IN SCHOOLS

Date: 01-10-2021

Since the emergence of COVID 19, we have noted a disappointing trend in young girls who previously were attending school well now being reluctant in attending school. I tried to interact with their parents and found that even parents are struggling to mend this vice.

Since closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the girls have been engaging in the following:
 Doing jobs and getting some money.
 Some engaging in premarital sex and now are parents.
 Some got married.
 Some now are deep in prostitution.
 Some are idling at market places.

School girls had not picked up well in comparison to their boys. Together with Mwangaza group officials we planned forums in schools at Makima location to sensitize the girls and support them on dealing with the new harmful engagements.. The forums were attended by the pupils and their teachers.

The topics discussed were:
• The importance of girl child education
• Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
• Life in and out of School
• Transitions of various stages of life
