VUKA DARAJA NA JIRANI INITIATIVE.

Vuka daraja na Jirani Initiative is a programme geared towards enabling all the community impossibilities are realized through your neighbour. It began in the year 2022 with the most vulnerable elderly people suffering from hunger and to extremes of death. Taking to rescue, Mr Nicholas Esekon with two village women agreed to start an evening door-to-door campaign to sensitize the community on the risks of hunger and teach alternate methods to food security so that they can curb the hunger strikes.

In one of the sessions, the elders seated near a tree decided to mobilize the idea and pass it to be a routine share where neighbors will be contributing foodstuff that will be shared with those that are more vulnerable. Step by step they realized the Name Vuka daraja na Jirani Initiative. Which means take your neighbor to the other side of the bridge?

Several Women-led organizations ranging from community-based CBOs to self-help groups, so it is wise to merge and support the initiative. Vuka Daraja na Jirani Initiative is a very dare idea in the Northern parts of Samburu where most locals are pastoralists and victims of cattle rustling wars and tribal clashes. There is no farming in these areas and most people rely on government aid and non-governmental support.

Merging such great efforts has seen so many women venture into agriculture, Silc Programmes and so many children are now enrolled in schools under the Vuka Daraja na Jirani Initiative. The local beneficiaries on the other hand have stayed on a very big agricultural Farm named after the initiative and are doing sales to Baragoi town every week. The money collected are taken to the group till pool to support school-going children for personal kits.

It has grown very first and the schools are enjoying the sense that various clubs in several Northern schools take the initiative and continue to organize learners to carry out community activities in their surroundings in support of the initiative.

The group now has expanded and is domained with so many programmes in it. The support they gain from relying on each other on technical, financial and in-kind supports is what has really propelled the function ability of the group. Seeing women do great work like fights against poverty and hunger is great challenge and a positive mark to every society and nation at large. We should all take this challenge to support all women groups working towards enabling change and realizing a better future in their endeavors.
